When will it snow again in the Lower Hudson Valley? There may be a slight chance we could see more of the white stuff the week of Dec. 8.

According to an AccuWeather forecast, there's a 56% chance of rain in the White Plains area of Westchester on Wednesday, Dec. 10, with a high of 40 degrees. That's different from a National Weather Service forecast, that predicts a 70% chance of snow in the area, albeit with little to no accumulation.

Come Friday, both weather platforms forecast at least a 50% chance of snow in the White Plains area, with accumulations of less than an inch.

In the Rockland area, AccuWeather predicts both rain and snow Wednesday in areas like Nanuet. There's also another chance of snow Friday and Saturday.

In Putnam County, AccuWeather predicts a chance of both rain and snow Wednesday, none Friday and another chance of snow Saturday.

Saturday could bring more significant storms

According to AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok, the continuing shifting of the polar vortex could bring with it bouts of flurries and snow squalls, but big snow may not head our way until the weekend.

According to an AccuWeather report, a potential storm Saturday could bring enough snow to require shoveling and plowing.

"The fast movement of the waves of cold air will generally prevent giant snowstorms from developing," Pastelok said. "However, the best chance for a rapidly intensifying storm on the East Coast would be around Dec. 12 or so, as an Alberta clipper storm may slow down just enough as it reaches the Atlantic to grab extra moisture."

An Alberta clipper is a fast-moving storm system that travels southeast from Central Canada into the United States, sometimes towards the East Coast.

Early forecasts from the NWS show a 30% chance of snow Saturday for the Lower Hudson Valley region, though it's too early to tell just how much snow we should expect.

Bundle up, it will be cold thanks to polar vortex

Even if we aren't going to see much snow this week in the area, it will still feel like winter thanks to the continuing disruption in the polar vortex. The polar vortex is a circular weather pattern in the Arctic, near the North Pole. A portion of the polar vortex may occasionally break off or drift south, bringing freezing weather to the U.S., Europe and Asia. Normally, the jet stream locks the vortex in and keeps it there.

While an NWS forecast says Monday's high is near 27 degrees for the Lower Hudson Valley, wind chill values of 15 and 20 are making it feel a lot colder. It's also breezy with a north wind blowing at around 10 mph and gusts as strong as 20 mph.

Monday night will be mostly cloudy, with low temperatures near 13 degrees.

On Tuesday, it will be slightly warmer, with highs near 32 during the day. Wind chill values between 15 and 25 will again make it feel colder. Tuesday night will bring more of the same, with lows of 31, and wind chill between 20 and 25.

Things may warm up by Wednesday, with highs in the lower 40s. A chance of wind gusts of up to 26 mph are possible. Lows at night could drop to around 32 degrees.
