NORMAN, Okla. (KFOR) — The Norman Police Department has provided an update on an officer who was critically injured after being struck by a car earlier in December along State Highway 9.

On Thursday, December 11, just before 7:20 p.m., Norman Police officer, Sgt. Justin Hackbarth was on the scene of a prior incident on State Highway 9, just west of 108th Avenue SE, when he was struck by a vehicle while standing outside of his patrol unit.

Hackbarth was checking on a speeding driver, whom he was attempting to stop after they had just hit his vehicle. Another car came upon the wreck and tried to avoid it, but ended up striking him instead.

“The officer was on a different call on State Highway nine when he was outside of his car and working through that incident when he was struck by the other motorist that wasn’t involved in that initial incident,” said Sarah Schettler of the Norman Police Department.

The scene was left scarred with tire marks and broken glass. State Highway 9, between 84th Avenue and 108th Avenue SE, was closed for several hours following the incident, but was eventually reopened at around 11 p.m. that night.

No one else was injured from the incident; however, Hackbarth was transported to OU Medical Center in critical but stable condition.
